Proud
iron arches curved over the main downtown drag, proclaiming Flint
Vehicle City. And that was before the car business came to town.
A decade of river steamboats, rail travel and population growth fueled
by immigrants launched Flint and its surroundings on a soaring trip
through the century.

This
is the town where they sleep them so thick that their feet hang
out of the windows. Thats what it seemed like in 1916,
when the auto industry boom drew such crowds that Buick put up
barracks and workers erected tent cities. Times seemed bright
as electric streetlights, but in the shadows was a world war and
a frightening epidemic.

When they werent
raiding Prohibitions bootleggers and stills, police were
likely rounding up suspected communists. A mayor William
H. McKeighan flirted with scandal and an auto pioneer
Billy Durant flirted with failure. It was all part of the
roar of a dizzying era that also saw hemlines and the IMA Auditorium
rise.

Economic depression
burdened many, the outcome of the Sit-Down Strikes liberated others.
Either way, it was a time of transition. Government began tackling
social problems, schools became community centers and beer
came back officially as the nationwide ban on booze
ended.

When war arrived
with big headlines and bigger demands for industrial goods, the
area's workers filled the "Arsenal of Democracy" even
as its young men went off to fight. Battle brought its horrors,
but also tales of heroes and heroic efforts. And when it was over,
peace brought new prosperity and population namely, the
baby boom.

There were
great achievements: industry production records, peak employment,
new factories and highways and hospitals. There was a great tragedy:
Michigan's deadliest tornado ever roared along Coldwater Road
and killed 116 people. "It was a time of prosperity,"
said one autoworker. "And everybody thought it was going
to get better."
