“I started out wanting to be a pharmacist, but biology classes and I didn’t mix well,” said Raymond, who retired from The Flint Journal in 1999.

“I went to a counselor at Flint Junior College, said he said I should be an architect. That started me on my career.”

Rowland, 59, retired from The Journal after 35 years in advertising and marketing.

After earning an art degree from Michigan State University, Raymond signed up for an apprenticeship program and expected to work a few months at three different newspapers. But when he showed up with an art portfolio, The Journal moved him into an open artist position.

After several years as an artist, Raymond went into national advertising, handling all food and distributor accounts. He later supervised the artists and layout for all printed material.

The department was eventually reorganized and the artists assigned to three different departments, Rowland said. He went to classified, automotive and real estate advertising.

Rowland remembers the special section for Buick’s 75th anniversary in 1978 as the first time that editorial and advertising staff worked closely together.

“There was an editor and a business manager, and they were the only ones who met. None of the other staff did. It was not encouraged, that’s for sure. There was not the mixing like there is now.”

Rowland said The Journal’s impending switch to offset printing will be a major leap forward.

“The quality should grow by leaps and bounds.” he said.

“Those pressmen have just done miracles with that machine they are working with. It’s antiquated. They’ve been able to hold (color) registrations a good share of the time. It’s not easy.”
