THE
FLINT JOURNAL / JANE HALE
Sandy Rich, ad services supervisor and former Pre-Press supervisor,
pastes up obituaries on deadline in the morning. The metal ruler
(called a pica pole or line gauge), razor knife and cut-and-paste
method of composing pages by hand are nearing extinction at The
Journal; only the obituary and classified ads pages are still
pieced together this way, and only a few people still work in
the department, which employed dozens in decades past.
