A ‘button box’ controls the operation of the presses. The big red ‘stop’ button would be pressed if the famous cry ever came: ‘Stop the presses!’ The other controls: ‘Jog,’ which lets pressmen (there are no women and never have been) install printing plates on the press drums by slowly turning them while the button is pressed; ‘safe,’ which locks out the presses from use and can only be disengaged — by pressing ‘run’ — by whoever engaged it; ‘slow,’ which once pushed runs the presses at a constant slow speed; and ‘fast,’ which powers the presses up to their top running speed of 40,000 copies an hour.
