A button box controls the operation of the presses. The big red stop button would be pressed if the famous cry ever came: Stop the presses! The other controls: Jog, which lets pressmen (there are no women and never have been) install printing plates on the press drums by slowly turning them while the button is pressed; safe, which locks out the presses from use and can only be disengaged — by pressing run — by whoever engaged it; slow, which once pushed runs the presses at a constant slow speed; and fast, which powers the presses up to their top running speed of 40,000 copies an hour.
