What readers saw of this 1955 photo of a hospital visit to a young kidnapping victim was mother and son, as above. What they didn�t see was that the head and hand of the boy�s father were literally painted out of the scene. Such manipulation was not unusual in the history of many newspapers, but would be unthinkable at The Journal today.
